Abitibi-Consolidated selects Forestry Solution from Cengea
Vancouver, BC — August 21, 2006 —Cengea announced that Abitibi-Consolidated's British Columbia Woodlands Division, based in Mackenzie, has selected Cengea as their comprehensive decision support system to aid in the management of their forest license. The objective of the project is to provide a comprehensive, consistent, accurate and efficient solution for tracking and reporting of spatial and tabular data associated with forest management operations.
Abitibi-Consolidated's BC Woodlands Division operates in the Mackenzie Timber Supply Area (north central British Columbia) managing 1.2 million ha of productive forest to support a 932,500 m3 Annual Allowable Cut. The Woodlands operation is responsible for supplying 3 Abitibi mills in the area, with fiber supply at distances of up to 500 km from the mills. Access management includes building up to 300km of road per year, and maintenance of up to 850km. Silviculture includes planting of 4 million seedlings each year. Harvesting and transportation of the fiber must be accomplished to ensure the mill demands are met consistently.
The Woodlands Division was looking for an integrated system to assist in the planning and decision making that supports this operation. It was important to have all tabular and spatial data integrated, and to manage all data (including documents, and costs tracking) in one place that was easy to access by all users. Better information leads to better decisions and better performance. The better information will assist in harvest scheduling, allowing for scenario building to optimize operations and minimize costs. Ensuring all data is easily accessible will improve tracking of activities and audits for this large public company.
"Abitibi staff reviewed several commercially available forest management software solutions, and after careful consideration decided that Cengea represented the best technical solution, and the best value." said Shaun Kuzio, Planning Superintendent and Cengea implementation project manager.
"As a leading provider of integrated timberland solutions, Cengea is proud to work with Abitibi-Consolidated's BC Woodlands Division to enhance its capabilities to meet the current and future demands they face in managing their woodlands operation." said Garry Rasmussen, of Cengea.
